Why walk when you can just hand a dude a $20 and have him carry you?
Many people love the idea of travel, but don’t actually like the reality of doing it. It might be nice to tell your friends that you’ve been to Colombia, but do you really want to go through all the rigamarole of getting there if you’re just going to be drunk on the beach the whole time? You can do that in Florida!
This may be why some people avoid travel. Others, however, try to find ways to simplify the experience — occasionally at the cost of harming locals.
This is the job of the “porter.” What do they do, you ask? Well, say you want to hike up a mountain, but you don’t want to debase yourself by actually hiking up the mountain. In cases like these, you might want to hire a pithu, or porter.
Often, these people work carrying children, the elderly or the disabled up to holy shrines. However, there are also some who just can’t stomach the idea of actually walking their way through a pilgrimage — and so, they hire a man to carry them.
